Lab Tech Who 'Stood Tall' During Emergency Achieves BEE Award

" I believe Paola embodies every part of our promise to be bold, exceptional, and called. She could have said it wasn’t her job or needed to return to the lab, but she didn’t. She stood tall and strong, walked into an unfamiliar setting, and performed admirably," according to a nurse who nominated her for the BEE award.

Paola Harvey, a phlebotomist, has achieved Conway Regional’s Be Exceptional Every Day (BEE) award for exceptional service during a cardiac emergency.

Modeled after the national DAISY award which recognizes nurses, the BEE honors non-nurse team members who provide exemplary care and service to patients at Conway Regional.

Paola was nominated for the BEE award based on her willingness to help when a patient went into cardiac arrest in the Emergency Department.

The event occurred while Paola was doing her phlebotomy duties. During the rush, she was given the responsibilities of a scribe during the code, unknowing to the ER nurse that she was a phlebotomist. She began taking detailed, thorough notes of the event.

After the event, the nurse who nominated Paola for the award realized that she wasn’t a student nurse but a phlebotomy tech who was there to take a blood sample from the patient. The nomination added, “She replied that she was happy to help and enjoyed being part of the team. I believe Paola embodies every part of our promise to be bold, exceptional, and called. She could have said it wasn’t her job or needed to return to the lab, but she didn’t. She stood tall and strong, walked into an unfamiliar setting, and performed admirably.”

Paola, who now works in the laboratory at Renaissance Women’s Center, has been with Conway Regional for more than three years, starting shortly after achieving her certificate in phlebotomy. “I was inexperienced, and Conway Regional took a chance on me,” said Paola. “I am so grateful. I have never felt so appreciated.”
